Slow Start Dooms Reds

For the second consecutive meeting, the St. FX X-Men jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the visiting University of New Brunswick Reds - this time in the game's first 6:36 - and were able to hold on for a 3-2 win tonight in Antigonish. The loss sends UNB to 21-2-3 on the season with both losses coming at the hands of their rivals in the last two weeks. The X-Men are now 14-9-3 and maintain their one point lead over Moncton for 3rd place.

It was a nightmarish start for Alex Dubeau and the Reds with St. FX connecting for goals by William Bower at 3:51, Mark Tremaine on the power play at 4:36, and Holden Cook at 6:36 of the opening period. Chris Clapperton (Gatenby, Anderson) cut into the deficit at 11:02 but the 3-1 score would hold up until the 3rd period, even though each team had four power play opportunities in the 2nd period. The Reds threw everything they had at goaltender Blade Mann-Dixon in the final twenty minutes, but a Kris Bennett (Simpson, Brace) wrist shot at 4:53 was the only shot to beat him, allowing the X-Men to escape with the two points.

- Patrick Watling replaced Alexandre Goulet in the line-up. Samuel Dove-McFalls and Tristan Pomerleau remain out injured.

- Shots in the game were 40-18 for UNB with period totals of 13-8, 12-7, and 15-3. However, as we have saw too many times to count, the shot clock very rarely means anything against the X-Men.

- Mann-Dixon, Clapperton, and Bower were named the game's three stars.

- UNB won 44 out of the 87 face-offs.

- The Reds went 0 for 5 on the power play. The X-Men were 1 for 7.

- Attendance was 1338.

- Alex Dubeau suffered his first regulation loss of the season. His record now stands at 11-1-2.

- Elsewhere around the conference tonight, Moncton picked up a 3-1 home win over Acadia and UPEI rallied from a 4-1 3rd period deficit to post a 5-4 shootout win over Dalhousie in Halifax.

- The Reds try to get back into the win column on Wednesday night when they travel to Moncton for a date with the Aigles Bleus. Game time is 7PM.
