Huskies Can't Crack Golden Bears Code

The #1 seeded Alberta Golden Bears shut-out their rival and #5 seeded Saskatchewan Huskies for a 3rd straight time in two weeks to earn a second straight trip to the University Cup gold medal game. They will look to defend their championship against the winner of tonight's UNB/St. FX semi-final while the Huskies will play the loser for the bronze medal.

- The game was scoreless through forty minutes of play despite the shots being 31-21 in favour of the Bears and Alberta starting the second period with a five minute power play.

- Alberta broke the ice 1:38 into the third period when captain Riley Kieser took an innocent looking wrist shot from the side boards that found its way past a screened Taran Kozun in the Saskatchewan goal.

- The back-breaker for the Huskies came at 10:32. U Sports goaltender of the year Kozun played the puck behind his net right to Golden Bear Grayson Pawlenchuk, who found Luke Philp in the slot for an easy insurance goal into a wide open net.

- Rookie Pawlenchuk iced the contest with an empty net goal, pouncing on a turnover in the Huskies zone and hitting the inside of the post with a spinning shot.

- After the empty net goal there was a scuffle at centre ice that resulted in the Huskies Jesse Forsberg and Alex Forsberg receiving instigating penalties and game misconducts. They will almost certainly be suspended for tomorrow's game.

- After losing game one of the Canada West final, Zach Sawchenko has shut-out the Huskies in three straight must-win games.

- The Huskies will be appearing in their 3rd bronze medal game in four years.

- Alberta will be participating in their 3rd title game in five years and will be looking to add to their record of 16 championships.

- The second semi-final between the UNB Reds and St. FX X-Men goes tonight at 9PM AST on Sportsnet 360.
