University Cup Seeds, Schedule Announced

U Sports has announced the schedule for the 2019 University Cup and, in a bit of a surprise, the #2 University of New Brunswick Reds will open their tournament against the #7 Carleton Ravens on Friday afternoon.

Many thought UNB would face the host Lethbridge Pronghorns - who ended up being seeded 8th - in the opening round, but the organizing committee obviously could not justify ranking the 9-17-2 Pronghorns ahead of the 18-5-5 Ravens (or the Reds ahead of the #1 Alberta Golden Bears), even though it leads to a quarter-final match-up against their conference-rival Alberta, something the committee has always tried to avoid. As a result, the Reds are looking at a much tougher opponent than originally thought.

Here are the participating teams:

#1) Alberta Golden Bears (24-3-1 regular season record/4-1 playoff record) - Canada West Champion
#2) UNB Reds (25-2-3/5-0) - AUS Champion
#3) Queen's Gaels (18-10-0/7-1) - OUA Champion
#4) Guelph Gryphons (13-11-4/6-3) - OUA Runner-Up
#5) Saskatchewan Huskies (25-3-0/3-2) - Canada West Runner-Up
#6) St. FX X-Men (15-12-3/5-5) - AUS Runner-Up
#7) Carleton Ravens (18-5-5/5-3) - OUA Bronze
#8) Lethbridge Pronghorns (9-17-2, 0-2) - Host
