Training Camp Gets Underway

The defending University Cup champion University of New Brunswick Reds were back on the ice this morning for their first official practice of the 2019-2020 season.

Here are some moving pictures to prove it (video courtesy the UNB Reds YouTube channel):

Lauzon Announced

In a summer that has been very quiet regarding recruiting news, the University of New Brunswick Reds finally made official one rumour that has persisted over the last few months, announcing the addition of former Pittsburgh Penguins second round draft pick Zachary Lauzon earlier today.

Lauzon, who describes himself as a "mobile defenceman who is hard to play against", will be looking to get his career back on track after a number of injuries forced him to miss most of the last two seasons, including all of last year when his Rouyn-Noranda Huskies captured the Memorial Cup.

Barring any unexpected departures, the addition of Lauzon - to go along with Benjamin Gagne - gives UNB eight defenceman on the roster for the first time in a number of years. It will be interesting to see how things play out, especially considering the fact there have been no forwards recruits announced to replace the departing Chris Clapperton, Cameron Brace, and Matt Boudens.

Anderson, McIvor Returning

The 2019-2020 University of New Brunswick Reds got a boost to their line-up today as it was announced defenceman - and team captain - Marcus McIvor and forward Stephen Anderson will both be returning for their fifth season.

The slick skating Anderson is coming off of the best season of his UNB career, finishing 6th in the league with 33 points while playing in all 30 regular season contests. He will be looking to improve on his career totals of 39 goals and 59 assists in 102 games.

Meanwhile, the steady, but perhaps unheralded, play of Marcus McIvor was on full display at the University Cup, where he was named a tournament all-star. His shot blocking ability and penalty kill play were key components during UNB's championship run, especially in the national championship game against Alberta.

Both players will be looking for a school-record 4th University Cup championship this season, which gets underway with an exhibition game against Acadia on September 16th.
