Komets Claim Kelly Cup

The ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets - featuring five recent Reds graduates - captured their first Kelly Cup Championship on July 2nd after defeating the South Carolina Stingrays three games to one in the final.

Like they had all postseason, the former Reds players played an integral part in the Komets series victory.

In game 1, a 7-2 Komets win, Marcus McIvor recorded a goal and an assist, Oliver Cooper scored a goal, and Matt Boudens, Randy Gazzola, and Matt Murphy all chipped in with an assist each.

After dropping the second game 4-2, Fort Wayne took game three by a 6-4 score. While Murphy and Cooper did not play, Boudens scored a goal and McIvor and Gazzola each had an assist.

With all five former Reds in the line-up for game four, the Komets wrapped up the championship with a 2-1 win. Gazzola and McIvor picked up assists in the clinching victory.

Former Acadia Axemen forward Stephen Harper was named recipient of the June M. Kelly Playoffs Most Valuable Player Award.

Congratulations go out to the Komets, and especially to the five former Reds players. This result should only help bring more attention to the quality of players being produced at the U Sports level - and especially by the UNB program.
